Welcome
to our classroom!
KC
children have settled into their new school environment with ease. They
have enjoyed exploring the school grounds, meeting new people and learning
about life at school. The Year 6 Foster Buddies have been great in providing
a familiar and helpful face in the playground. This transition to school is
the focus of our Term 1 HSIE unit “School Days”.
Nursery Rhymes have
been chosen as the basis of our literature unit in first few weeks of Term
1. The Nursery Rhymes are usually well known to most children and the
familiarity of the theme
helps build their confidence in reading.
The pre reading activities allow students to explore the different aspects
of language and the concepts of print. From Week 7, a different letter/sound is
introduced each week. Students enjoy a variety of activities such as phonics /
reading, literature activities, and visual arts, related to the focus sound.
When "Tt" was introduced we made toast and it was delicious. Diary writing offers the opportunity for students to write about their
experiences at home and at school.
Kindergarten students also participate in a fine motor program which
involves fluency patterns, cutting, tracing and manipulative skills.

Maths is
lots of fun too because the activities are very practical and child centred.
To reinforce the concept of patterns in the Numeration Strand, students made
a variety of patterns using pasta, paper chains, pattern blocks and shape
necklaces. For sorting in the Data Strand, Kindergarten read the poem
“buttons” by Avelyn Davidson. They then sorted buttons by shape, size,
colour and the number of holes and were able to identify the criteria for
each group. The theme of buttons was further explored by reading “The Lost
Button” by Arnold Lobel and students used their number skills to work how many buttons were involved in the story.
Next term we begin CMIT maths groups which are lots of fun and reinforce
number concepts such as number recognition, counting and labelling
collections of objects, addition, subtraction, grouping and sharing
The
science unit this term is about Built Environments where students explore
how their needs are met at both home and at school. The students investigate
the characteristics of different building materials using a simple series of
experiments. This allows them to determine why the materials have been used
in certain ways e.g terracotta tiles are waterproof, they keep the sun out
and they are strong.
KC enjoy
visiting the Computer room and enjoy using the Kidpix program which helps
develop their mouse and keyboard skills. |

Creative
and Practical arts is an important aspect of the kindergarten program.
Visual arts activities are linked to nursery rhymes, HSIE, focus sound of
the week and related literature. The students enjoyed making these beautiful
sunflowers using flour paint and their fingers! The students made their
colourful turtles using pastels and edicol dye.
In Drama, students are
provided with opportunities to explore their imagination and participate in
different drama techniques such as improvisation, hot seat, role play and
movement.
The PDHealth and P.E
program encourages active participation in a range of sequential skill based
games and activities each week. Social skills is an important focus in
Kindergarten and topics
include friendship, positive self esteem, listening skills and cooperation.
KC hope
you have enjoyed visiting their classroom.
